Common Questions About Windows and Door Installation
1. How do I know which companies to call? Once you start considering the selection of a window company, you'll soon discover that your options are vast. There are many companies that offer replacement window products and services so how can you effectively evaluate which is the right choice for you? First, you can start by determining the number of years the company has been in business. Longevity is encouraging for a number of reasons; it means that 1) the company has successfully sustained itself by responsibly serving a growing number of homeowners, 2) its more likely to be financially sound than a new business, and 3) most importantly, the company is more likely to be around in the future should you need service or repair. Next, talk to friends and family who have purchased similar products and services in the past. Ask about their personal experiences (including issues like pricing, company response times to issues before and after the sales, performance of products, and more) and if they would recommend that company to others. You should also contact the Better Business Bureau, Angie's List, the Illinois Attorney General's Office, and other consumer protection groups to check out the past performance of the companies under consideration. These are just a few of the factors you should use to consider companies that you will contract to perform services on your home. We also provide a page that outlines other important factors for selecting a home improvement company. 2. Why do sales representatives need to come to my home for a presentation? If you want to get an accurate estimate for your project, it's necessary that a company representative visit your home to measure your windows and evaluate the contributing factors (e.g. rotting window sills) that will ultimately affect your price. Additionally, since replacement windows often require a significant investment, it's important that you have answers to all of your questions. Before you contract a replacement window company, you should be comfortable and confident with your decision. If you aren't comfortable having a number of replacement window companies visit your home, you could always visit the companies' showrooms. This option provides you with an opportunity to learn more about the company by touring their facilities and demonstrating their products without any inconvenience to you. 3. What is considered a reasonable price for my project? There are a number of factors that will contribute to the final price of your project - ranging from the number of windows that you plan to replace and the size of those windows to the framing materials and the options you select. For example, if you choose to buy vinyl windows the average window size is 30 inches by 48 inches and can range in average cost from $150.00 to $500.00 per window. When you add options and the costs of installation, your costs will include accordingly. However, if you choose to install energy efficient vinyl windows, this will offset some of costs in the long run through reduced heating and cooling bills. 4. Do I need three estimates from window companies? Although we're not sure how "three" became the magic number of estimates accepted as the consumers' rule-of-thumb, we do recognize the significance of shopping around. Unfortunately, the remodeling industry has long been defined by the unscrupulous practices of a few and so consumers have found that one means of protection was to get multiple estimates for assurances that they weren't being mislead. While this practice may offer some limited protection, we have found most consumers who use this selection strategy don't complete the proper "due diligence" on any of those companies and reduce their decision to price. And while budget is a large factor in any spending decision, price doesn't always (or even usually) translate into value or quality. So do you need three estimates? Only if you weren't satisfied with the first two - if the first company you met with was able to produce a current state license, proof of insurance. Other information typically provided by reputable companies include: 1) testimonials and/or references, 2) before and after photographs. Rarely will the "cheapest" price be the best in the long run. When comparing "apples to apples", you should take into account factors such as how long the company has been established and the specific terms of their warranties. 5. What are my payment options? At Dilworth Windows & Doors, we work to accommodate the diverse financial needs of our clientele. We accept cash, check or charge. Additionally, we have formed strategic relationships with nationally recognized lenders like Wells Fargo Bank. You can complete our online application or get more information to determine if financing is the most appropriate option for you. 6. How long will it take to get my windows installed? Since replacement windows are custom made to fit your opening, it may take between two to four weeks to have them produced. Typically, we will schedule an installation within that time period; there are other factors, however, that can influence how quickly we can get your project completed including: 1) special ordered products may take longer to produce, 2) "busy" season (typically spring and fall) may result in an installation backlog - ask your sales representative for specific information. 7. Will this be a huge inconvenience to my family? Replacing the windows in your home doesn't mean that your family should endure disruption to your everyday activities. Often times, the experience and dedication of the installation crew are what will inevitably determine your level of inconvenience. At Dilworth Windows & Doors, our installers are directly employed by the company assuring that we have total control over your entire window replacement experience. We train our crews to assure minimum disruption and efficient installation. 8. What should I ask about when I check a reference?
9. Are there special certifications for window companies and window products? The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) will have certification information regarding most window products. This information, which should be provided with the product, will help you evaluate the energy efficiency and performance of the window products under consideration. 10. What is a recession period and what does it mean to me? The state of Illinois requires that all home improvement products be purchased with a 72-hour period of recession. Throughout that period, the purchaser(s) has the right to rescind (or change their minds) with no obligation. 11. Is there an advantage to choosing a company that has employed installers instead of subcontractors? In most cases, there are significant advantages working with a window replacement company that directly employs installation crews instead of subcontracting them. First, the company has more control over prioritizing work assignments, schedules for reporting to and departing from the job site, and assures skills training and competence of employees. If a company employs installers, your personal liability is reduced if there are any job site accidents or injuries. |
